Primary Community (Ages 2.5- 6 Years)
We have created a sunny, open environment for this group. We’ve filled our classrooms with beautiful Montessori materials that capture the children’s interest and help them learn about the world around them. There is a beautiful, serene outdoor environment available to these children as well. The children are introduced to language, math, science, and geography on a daily basis. They share experiences in art, music, movement, dance and Spanish language classes as well. Our teachers act as education guides, always alert to the readiness and interest of each child. Children are taught individually, in small groups, and with whole class lessons.
Practical Life:
Practical life is the foundation of the classroom and the foundation of Montessori. In practical life you can introduce language, math and sensorial. Primary students are introduced to Care of self, Care of environment, Grace and courtesy, and movement balancing. Activities include self-buttoning, zipping, sweeping, polishing, greetings, serving, and flower arranging to name a few.
Sensorial:
The child learns through his senses. His senses are the windows, touchstones, to his intellect. We are not developing but refining the child’s senses in the Montessori environment. Each of the sensorial materials isolates one definite quality, such as shape, color, weight, size, sound and smell, sharpening the child’s senses.
Language:
From spoke to written. Through the Montessori materials the child will learn phonetic reading, the “parts of speech”, which will finally lead to “total reading”, that is where the child can understand the feelings, the concept, and the meaning of what another person has written.
Math:
Every child has the capacity to reason, calculate, and estimate. We use the decimal system, base 10. The pink tower has 10 cubes, the cylinder blocks have 10 cylinders, and 10 matching cylindrical insets, the broad stair has 10 rectangular prisms. The primary students work with number rods, sandpaper figures, spindle boxes, numerals and counters, and memory game of numbers.
Cultural Subjects:
The cultural subjects include art, music, geography, anthropology, botany, zoology, history and some physics experiments. Every week, children are exposed to new art and music lessons ranging from singing to learning about composers and cultural instruments. The children also work with plants, animals, rocks, tools and instruments in our outdoor environment. History is represented as the progress of mankind of earth, not the sequence of chronological events. All of these subjects will make the child realize that everything has a function to perform.
